What Does Low Resolution Mean?

All digital photos are made up of many pixels (squares) that together make up the image – much like a mosaic. The higher the resolution, the more pixels there are, and the smaller those pixels appear.

A very high-resolution image will have barely visible pixels and excellent depth of colour and sharpness. A low-resolution image will have much fewer and larger pixels, meaning that the pixels themselves become visible to the eye. As there are fewer pixels to define the range of colour and edges of objects, images can appear blocky, blurry, dark or have random pixel patterns.

A simple 'rule of thumb' is that a photo should be 300dpi at the size you wish to use it in print. If the file size is more than 1mb then it should be sufficient resolution to use. Full page images will need to be closer to 5mb.
