Types of File Directory

Types of File Directory

A directory is a file system cataloguing structure made up of folders that are organised hierarchically.

To create your yearbook file directory, firstly decide how you want to organise your content. You could have a folder for each page, or alternatively, organise in topic or area sections with the article folders within that.

Page Number Directory

To create a folder directory based on page numbers is fairly straightforward. The key thing to remember here is to include a zero at the front of numbers less than 10 if you have less than 99 pages in total, or two zeros if your book is over 100 pages. This ensures that the folders will appear in strict order from 001 through to 100. You can use the word 'Page' in front of the number, as long as you keep the same format throughout.

You can also include a brief description of what the page is about - as long as it is after the page number. The advantage of this system is that at a glance you can see if a page is missing or duplicated.

Subject Directory

If your yearbook is divided into sections, you may prefer to arrange the folder directory by section and then have the relevant articles in folders within the section folder.
With this system, you do need to ensure that the name of the folder matches up with what is on your page plan.
